Su padre fue Dagchen Zangpo Pal y su madre Jomo Lugkye. Se orden\u00f3 a los diecisiete a\u00f1os. Complet\u00f3 su formaci\u00f3n en sutra y tantra con Choeje Dragphugpa, su hermano mayor, Buton, y Pang Lotsawa, entre otros. Fue reconocido como un erudito consumado. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los principales alumnos de Sonam Gyaltsen fueron: Buton, Gadenpa Kunchok Sonam, Jamyang Namkha Dorje, Nyethangpa Sherab Nangwa, Yanglunpa Senge Gyalsten, Choeje Palden Tsultrim, Choeje Sungpa, Choeje Nyawon, el Lachen Kunga Gyaltsen, Jonangpa Khenchen Jangchup Senge, el gran Lotsawa Jangchup Tsemo, Je Redawa, y Je Tsongkhapa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lama Dampa Sonam Gyaltsen fue invitado a visitar la corte mongola (Yuan), pero siempre declin\u00f3 la invitaci\u00f3n. Lama Dampa Sonam Gyaltsen estaba m\u00e1s interesado en el estudio, la ense\u00f1anza y el retiro meditativo.
