Ngawang Kunga Sonam Rinchen, the thirtieth Sakya throneholder, was born in 1705. His father was the twenty-ninth Sakya throneholder, Ngawang Kunga Tashi. He was recognized as the reincarnation of Ngawang Sonam Wangchuk, the twenty-eighth Sakya throneholder.
He received teachings from many masters and to name a few: his father, Konchog Gyalpo, Ngawang Khyentse Rabten (the tenth abbot of Nalendra Monastery), Gongkar Lodrö Wangchuk, Kunga Legpai Jungne, Jampa Sonam Zangpo (the thirtieth abbot of Ngor Monastery), and Thartse Jampa Lhawang Ridzin.
He was well-known in dispelling obstacles.
