H.E. Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk Rinpoche

Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk (c. 1921 – c. 2008)

Great Masters of the 20th Century

Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk was born in Derge. He received full ordination form Ngor Thartse Namkha Kunsang Tenpa. He also received teachings and transmissions including Lamdre from masters like Do-sib Khen Thupten, Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, and Ajam Tulku. At a young age, he was appointed as the lead chanter at Khamje Shedra and abbot of Do-sib and Wara Monasteries. Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk established Dzongsar Shedra in Bir and Chauntra. Rinpoche was bestowed the title “Yongzin.”

In 2008, Rinpoche invited the high lamas of Sakya and Ngor traditions to receive the Lamdre teaching from His Holiness the Sakya Trichen (the 41st Sakya throne holder). As the teaching was nearing its completion, Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk uttered, “I have no more affairs to tend to; I can die peacefully.” Khenchen’s mind mingled with dharmata as he passed away.
